Adhesive choice can determine the success or failure of an installation. We compare the main products on the market and explain how to apply them correctly.
The adhesive is the most critical element of a foam deck installation. An unsuitable adhesive can cause pieces to peel off within months, especially in high-temperature zones like a boat deck in a Mediterranean summer. Here we explain what works and what does not.
The two adhesives recommended by CALNAUTIC
Sikaflex 291
The quintessential multipurpose marine adhesive sealant. Flexible, heat and UV resistant, and compatible with fibreglass, aluminium, steel and wood. Full cure time: 7 days. Ideal for installations where maximum long-term durability is sought.
3M 5200 Fast Cure
Fast-cure version of the classic 3M 5200. Reaches 80% of its strength in 24 hours, allowing faster return to sailing. Final strength slightly higher than Sikaflex 291. Slightly more expensive, but recommended for professional installations or when deadlines are tight.
What you should never use
- White or hardware store contact glues: not suitable for outdoor marine use.
- Standard bathroom silicone: loses adhesion with heat and salt.
- Cyanoacrylate adhesives (superglue): brittle under heat and humidity.
- Inflexible epoxy adhesives: crack under hull movement.
Correct application technique
- 1Clean and degrease both surfaces with acetone or specific cleaner.
- 2Apply a thin, even layer of adhesive with a foam roller or spatula.
- 3Apply to both surfaces (foam and boat deck).
- 4Wait 10–15 minutes until the adhesive is touch-dry.
- 5Join surfaces progressively to avoid air bubbles.
- 6Press with roller or palm for 2–3 minutes.
