When looking for an alternative to natural teak, two main product families appear: EVA marine foam (like CALNAUTIC's) and rigid PVC synthetic teak panels. Both imitate teak, but they behave very differently on board. This comparison helps you choose the right one for your boat.
Comfort underfoot
EVA foam is slightly flexible and cushioned, which makes it much more comfortable for walking and standing barefoot for hours. PVC is a rigid panel: closer to real teak in hardness, but less pleasant underfoot on long days.
Temperature under the sun
This is a key point in the Mediterranean. EVA foam insulates from heat and stays cool; the denser PVC accumulates more temperature and can burn bare feet in the height of August. For hot climates, EVA clearly wins.
Grip, weight and durability
- Grip: the EVA foam texture offers better wet anti-slip performance.
- Weight: EVA is up to 60% lighter than natural teak; PVC weighs more.
- Installation: EVA adapts to complex hull curves; rigid PVC is harder on very curved surfaces.
- Durability: both resist UV and salt; quality EVA carries a 10-year warranty against discolouration.
When to choose each one?
Choose EVA marine foam if you prioritise comfort, coolness under the sun, light weight and adaptation to complex shapes — the ideal option for most leisure boats, sailboats and jet skis. Rigid PVC may make sense if you want maximum hardness and are not concerned about heat or weight.
