Step-by-step guide to installing your CALNAUTIC foam deck without construction work, without special tools and with professional results. Everything you need to know before starting.
One of the great advantages of CALNAUTIC marine foam is that any boat owner can install it without prior nautical work experience. The pieces arrive custom-cut and numbered, eliminating most potential errors. With two people and a free day, a 10-metre boat is completely transformed.
What you need before you start
- Marine contact adhesive: Sikaflex 291 or 3M 5200 Fast Cure.
- 10–15 cm foam roller for applying the adhesive.
- Marine degreaser (acetone or specific cleaner).
- Plastic spatula or pressure roller for sealing edges.
- Masking tape to protect adjacent areas.
- Your CALNAUTIC foam pieces (already cut and numbered).
Step 1: prepare the surface
The surface must be completely clean, dry and free of grease, wax or varnish. Use marine degreaser and a lint-free cloth. This step is critical: 90% of adhesion problems come from a poorly prepared surface. If the deck has old teak, sand it lightly to create a rough texture.
Step 2: dry-fit and check numbering
Before applying any adhesive, dry-fit all pieces to verify the fit. CALNAUTIC pieces are numbered according to the included technical plan. Take 20 minutes on this step: once the adhesive is applied, there's no room for error.
Step 3: apply the adhesive
Apply contact adhesive to both the back of the foam and the boat surface. Leave it to dry for 10–15 minutes until touch-dry (tacky but not transferring). With the contact method, the bond is immediate and very strong the moment you join the two surfaces — so there are no second chances.
Step 4: bond and press
Carefully align the piece from one end and lay it down progressively to avoid air bubbles. Once in contact, press with the roller from centre to edges. For curved areas, use hands with even pressure. Leave to cure for 24 hours before sailing.
